Created by Robert Petit in 1946, Bergere de France is family owned and is now run by Mr Petit’s son, Jean-Louis and grandson Geoffroy.
Based in Bar-le-Duc, in the heart of the Lorraine region, it is the last industrial woolen mill in France to produce hand-knitting yarns and boasts one of the largest and most advanced mills of its kind in Europe.

The Berroco story begins in the early 1800s… when Warren Wheelock's great-great-great-grandfather, Jerry Wheelock, joined the Daniel Day Mill. Located in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, this mill was one of the first in the fledgling United States to produce woolen cloth. He created an enterprise that has progressed through six generations. Now operating on the site of the old Lonsdale Cotton Mill (1904) in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Berroco continues the family tradition, providing quality textiles by continually adapting to the changing needs of the times.

Upon the Banwy fair the Yarnies they did come to see the treasure trove this couple had begun. All sorts came to the mill knitters skipped with weavers the felters wore their hats crocheters in a fever. The Yarnies were ecstatic to touch and feel and see the most amazing colors there possibly could be. The Yarnie couple beamed to share what they had made cooking pots of color into strands of every shade. So from the roof they shouted to Yarnies everywhere.”

Knitters have chosen DMC’s needlework threads for almost three centuries, attesting to their commitment to color, quality, and their customers. Originally established in 1746, the company was initiated in the United States in the 1920s, moved from New York City to Elizabeth, New Jersey, and made its last move during the 1980s to South Kearny, New Jersey. Since then, DMC has expanded to selling products in over 130 countries around the world, and the original needlework threads that started the legacy are still being manufactured today in France.

Dream In Color

The artists of Dream In Color began as colleagues at a school that highlighted the importance of creativity and hands-on learning. They opened a store in 2004 to share their love of knitting. The store’s special technique of veil dyeing was established in 2006 by an artist at the store who began replicating water color techniques on skeins of yarn. The veil dyeing became so popular that the shop closed later that year so the artists could focus all of their time on running their company. Dream In Color’s yarn colors and textures are inspired by nature, and all of their fibers are purchased and dyed in the United States.
In 2004, designer Leanne Prouse developed the Ella Rae label in association with KFI. As one of Australia’s top knitwear designers, she has been designing for more than 20 years and has had her own line of yarns for over five years. In 1880 the original spinning company was established in Ossett by the Harrap brothers, Tom and Henry, originally using only wool fibres. Ten years later the business moved to the site it currently occupies in Alverthorpe, Wakefield.

He chose the name Sirdar, meaning leader, after Lord Kitchener’s appointment as Sirdar of the Egyptian Army.
